Pre-Op Thoughts...

My RNY gastric bypass surgery has been scheduled for Monday, December 13th.  Now, to you naysayers, just close the blog now... I have already made up my mind, have the surgery scheduled, and don't need negativity.  I have talked to many people who had had the surgery and have first-hand experience.  I've done my research and decided that this is what I need to do - for ME and my family.  If you are willing to offer support and prayers, I'll be happy to have you follow my journey!  I'm very nervous but know it will be worth it.

Today is the beginning of the end of my life-long love affair with food.  I started my "pre-op liver shrinking diet" this morning.  Here's what I will be eating for the next 13 days:
Breakfast
1 high-protein meal replacement drink (I have selected a combination of Slim Fast (vanilla & chocolate) and Carnation Instant Breakfast low carb)

Lunch
1 high-protein meal replacement drink
1 small piece of fruit

Afternoon snack
6oz. light (fat free) yogurt

Dinner
4oz. lean turkey, chicken or roast beef
2 slices diet bread
1 cup raw veggies

Snack
10 baby carrots

I also need to consume at least 64oz. of water each day.

So here I am, about half way through Day 1 of the liver shrinking diet.  I am ready to EAT MY ARM!!  I am used to having breakfast and a mid-morning snack and so far today I've had only liquids... kill me now.  But I have been told that if I can make it through the pre-op diet, I can handle post-op.  I head to Richmond tomorrow morning for pre-op testing and classes, which include lab work, chest x-ray, an EKG, an appointment with the nurse practitioner, and a 4-hour pre-op class.  It will be a long day of appointments - hopefully I'll be so busy running between offices that I won't have time to realize how hungry I am!

I am praying that I have a positive experience and a SAFE and successful surgery and recovery.  I hope to update often.  I feel as though the Lord has opened this door for a reason and I am trusting in Him.  My insurance will cover the surgery because I am currently considered morbidly obese and the risk of NOT having the surgery is greater than having it.  Sending love and respect to all of my friends near and far.  Love you all very much!

  1. honey- best of luck! I got the lap band in August. The diet for weight loss surgery is a struggle in the beginning but it's worth it! I wish you a healthy recovery! Send me your address. I have a TON of sample packs of Nectar protein drinks in flavors that i know I wouldn't like cause i'm WAY too picky. You might like them though!

    ALL MY LOVE!!!

    Pam :)

  3. Lizzy, I am very proud of you for taking such a big step towards your good health. I also want to tell you how much I appreciate that you are willing to share your struggles with us. I struggle so much with medication side effect issues & also emotional eating. I want to work towards good health also. Unfortunately, at this point I take two steps forward and one step back. Thanks for being an inspiration. I will be praying for you before, during and after your surgery!! If you need anything, let me know... Gail G.
